The master database stores all the system-level information of an SQL Server instance, which includes: Server configuration settings Logon accounts Linked servers information Startup stored procedure File locations of user databases If the master database is unavailable, the SQL Server cannot start. I checked with my SQL guy and he said that unfortunately is a limitation of MSSQL Server. All the metadata and system-level information regarding SQL Server system stored on this database. When I brought up this concern with my service provider, this was his reply: I certainly don't want other clients to know the name of my database or my login. While I can't access other clients' databases nor see passwords, it seems strange to me that I would even be able to see this information. When I log in to the server using Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio Express, I can see a whole lot of information, including the names of all of the databases on the server and all of the logins. You will need to create a new database and deploy to that. Other clients of our hosting company use this same server for their databases. master is a required system database that's responsible for holding info about all the the other database on the server instance, system metrics/config, managing logins
